I’ve always loved music. Whenever I hear a rhythm or pick up on a beat, I can’t help but tap along to the tempo and get moving. So it should really come as no surprise when I tell you the start of my weight loss journey was inspired by music. This is my story, and how any music lover could also benefit from dancing their way to a healthy weight.
You’re probably wondering where it all began. Although a little sad to think about, my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Overall, she’s in pretty good shape for her age, so she wasn’t phased at the prospect of trying to stay healthy throughout her treatment. One of her medical professionals suggested a little light dancing should she find she has the energy.
Now, I did not know about this suggestion, so I was pretty shocked to walk in to the living room one afternoon and find my 72 year old grandmother getting down to the beats whilst watching music channels on TV! I joined in with her, and we had the best time dancing away. Sure, I got a little worn out, but the feeling was amazing. It was then that I realized ‘hey, wait a minute, this is exercise’!
Dancing Myself to Fitness
As I started to see the benefits of this new found workout, I couldn’t help but dance even more. It was like hitting the gym without the effort! I eventually developed a full routine that I used every night to get into shape.
As a result of my weight loss, I’m a happier, more confident person. My love of music and dancing along to the hottest tracks has helped me reach a place I didn’t think was possible. Losing weight was something I’d been wanting to do for a very long time, but traditional methods simply didn’t work out for me. With dancing, the results are not only visible, but also fun to achieve. Why do something the hard way when you can get in shape and be healthy just by having fun and doing something you love?
So, you probably want to know the details of how I reached my weight loss goals. Well, here’s what worked for me!
The music I listened to
I listened to a whole variety of music, all right there on my computer. Variety is important if you want to keep yourself motivated and not get bored by your routine. But for the most part, I chose high energy club hits, remixes of current chart toppers and even fun, cheesy pop music for a little extra fun. These fast, upbeat tunes helped me really get moving.
The dances I did daily
I’m not going to lie – in the beginning, all I did was flail and hope for the best! I didn’t know the first thing about dancing! But as long as you’re staying active and keeping your body moving, it counts.
As you go on, you’ll start to develop more rhythm and get in touch with your body, helping you create more definitive dance ‘moves’. I’d do this for at least an hour every single night – sometimes more, as it was just so much fun!
The changes I made to my diet
You may be surprised to know that my weight loss was mainly a result of my new dedication exercise rather than a drastic change to my diet. Instead, I just focused on healthy, home cooked meals. While I obviously cut out junk food, candy and soda for the most part, I didn’t ban them from my diet entirely. In my experience I’ve found everything in moderation is fine. If you limit yourself, you’ll only crave more and binge eat later.
With all of these combined, I managed to lose a total of 43lbs and could not be happier with the results.
If you’re looking to lose weight and get in shape by jamming to your favorite band, I wholeheartedly suggest you get on that. Just use a music app or even a customized CD mix to throw together a fun, motivational playlist that you’d be happy to work out and party to. Remember, exercise is supposed to be enjoyable, so feel free to have fun with it. If you need to get in the mood, there’s no reason you can’t dress up and pretend you’re in a hot new music video or about to hit the club!
If you’re ready to start your journey and find weight loss success through music like I did, it’s time to get dancing.
